Share A Hotel Room For Half The Price?

With hotel room prices steep and getting higher, especially in the big tourist-trap cities, would you opt to share a room with another traveler?  The drastic idea wasn’t so unusual until just over a century or so ago, before hotels or motels existed. Then roadside inns didn’t rent rooms, just beds. The more fortunate guests got a bed with only two or three other snoozers in it.

A start-up online hotel room-sharing program called Easynest is now booking people willing to share at many hotels and resorts. Potential clients are required to fill out personal data, choices, schedules and other information. Then, matches are offered. So far, the service is totally free, but if the program evolves successfully, a fee is a certainty.

Cruise lines have offered share-your-cabin service for a long time, but this may be the first it's available for hotel rooms. For more information about the new website that identifies itself as "Airbnb for hotels and resorts”, go to www.easynest.com

Q: Is Travel Insurance Coverage A Good Idea? PDF Print E-mail

Guest Editor LRZ, San Antonio TX: From our travel insurance experience, I can declare it’s worth the cost. Several years ago, we booked a cruise/excursion trip through our local travel agency.

Because of the length of the journey and expenses involved, we were persuaded to take out comprehensive travel insurance. The premium added about 5% to our overall costs. As events unfolded, it proved to be a good investment.

On the morning of our flight, we arrived at the airport and checked in. As departure time approached, the waiting lines got longer and there was no boarding announcement, we realized something was wrong. We were then informed that our flight was delayed because of an iced-in airport where we were scheduled to change planes. We waited, but after several promises, our flight never left.

Be Aware Of Fake Uber Pick-Ups At Airports PDF Print E-mail

At some of the world’s busiest terminals, there has been a rash of hundreds of private car scammers picking up riders. They claim to have been sent by Uber and other legitimate operators.

They’re not only illegal, but also unsafe and uninsured. They often charge customers much larger fares than were quoted when Uber booked the rides by phone/smartphone. One recent example was an Uber quote of $120 for a trip from La Guardia in New York to Princeton, New Jersey.

Holland America Limits Smoking Areas Aboard PDF Print E-mail

Imagine that exciting cruise you’ve anticipated for months. Inhaling fresh sea air as you bask on the deck, watching the clouds and ocean roll by. Then, koff, koff, koff! A guy stomps by puffing on a cigarette, or worse, a stinky cigar. Your peaceful day at sea is ruined by the annoying odor of smoky nicotine.

Along with many other cruise lines, Holland America wants its passengers to enjoy their journeys in clean air. Smoking now is forbidden everywhere inside, and allowed only in certain isolated outdoor areas. For addicted puffers who ignore the ban, there’s a $250 extra cleaning fee added to their bills. So, butt out!
