Teen Brit completes memorable cruise

Did you read all about it? A 17-year-old British kid just returned after sailing 28,000 miles around the world. The cruise would have been very boring, but every day he did lifeboat drill, played deck shuffleboard, won at bingo, attended the stage show in the theater and lined up for midnight buffet. And all tips were included.

Senior Travel Activity Fights Off Dementia PDF Print E-mail

A recent article in the London Daily Express recommends 45 minutes of intense exercise as the best way to prevent seniors from fading mentally. Additionally, as we at travel4seniors.com always emphasize, getting up from the couch and roaming the world for days and weeks is even more effective.

Of course, air travel today has enough mental stress to cause dementia in wanderers of all ages. There’s also the confusion of running for planes, trains and buses, roaming dangerous foreign streets, overpriced cafes, spooky museums and strolling barefoot on broken bottle beaches.

So, next time you roam away from home, add regular daily exercise to your wanderings. Before you leave the hotel, do 30 minutes in the gym and/or laps in the pool. In big cities, instead to hailing taxis for short hops, do at least an hour of walking every day. And, of course, if the café you’re visiting features active native dances, be sure to join in on the fun and exercise of it all.

New York NY: Less Subway Seats = Jammed Standers PDF Print E-mail

Have you been on a NYC subway train recently? If so, you’re aware of all the continuing problems. Accidents, slowdowns, crime, vandalism, grafitti, unhappy riders, suicides. Now the beancounters of the MTA have come up with a brilliant plan.

They want to remove some of the seats so they can cram more standing riders into the already-jammed cars. Those brilliant MTA planners must have been talking to some of their dopplegangers in the airline industry.

If you’ve flown in the cheap airline seats lately, you’ll realize the spaces have been reduced to where your legs are pushed up against your chest. And the flatulent fat passenger in the seat next to you has suddenly spread into your lap.

Tombstone AZ: The Wild West Town Too Tough To Die PDF Print E-mail

If your travels take you to Tucson, plan to spend a day in the famous Old West town of Tombstone. It’s about an hour’s drive south via I-10 on the way to the Mexican border town of Nogales.

There are daily events along the famed Main Street, including a staged shoot-out between characters representing Marshal Wyatt Earp and the bad guys at the O.K. Corral. Also programs at the Bird Cage Theater, Boot Hill Cemetery, as well as jeep tours and stage coach rides.

The historic town has also been the site of many Western movies, including Fort Apache, Duel in the Sun and Broken Arrow. For info, go to tombstoneweb.com

Boutique Hotels = Smaller Rooms @ Larger Prices PDF Print E-mail

The trend in hotels these days in NYC, London, Paris, Venice and other large cities is to appeal to tourists with tiny and tinier rooms. They’re promoted as all comfy and cute, but could be viewed as reminders of cramped Army troop train compartments. Or the Three Stooges sharing a boutique room.

Regular-sized hotel rooms are redesigned by cutting them into two or three smaller sleeping areas, and calling them boutique rooms. Of course, that means the hotel earns two or three times what they had been charging for the single, traditionally-sized room.

It’s similar to what airlines do now to make more money by jamming more passengers into their formerly-comfortable seating areas. So, when you’re making reservations for big-city hotels, be sure you’re aware that when the word boutique appears, you’ll have to pay a hell of a lot more for a hell of a lot less.

Savvy Seniors Should Consider Visiting Cuba PDF Print E-mail

When US to Cuba flights were allowed again last year, airlines had hopes of big biz. However, it hasn’t happened and there have been some schedule cutbacks. One reason is the continuing bothersome U.S. State Department restrictions.

Many seasoned travelers have been asking for years why continue any kind of restrictions against Cuba. Is it because it’s still Castro’s Communist isle? There are no restrictions on visiting China, Vietnam or Russia, all still super Commie.
