#TipTheBillChallenge Encourages 100% Waiter Tips

Senior travelers often are confused about tipping. In a few countries, it’s forbidden and factored in with the price of the meal or drink. In almost all other parts of the world, the diner and drinker are expected to leave a tip after satisfactory service.

So, how much should you tip? It depends on service, total amount and other factors. The most general answer if from 15 to 20 percent of the bill. Your travel4seniors.com editor remembers car hopping at a Hot Shoppe in Philly way back as a college student. With all our running around the parking lot, we were lucky to get 10 percent. And not so lucky when the no-tip car drivers tossed their empty plates and trays at us as they raced away.

Food servers, both indoor and outdoor, work hard and deserve a tip. Sometimes a generous one can be a happy surprise. Recently, some very generous diners have been leaving 100 percent tips through the #TipTheBillChallenge, and bragging about it on social media. Hey, where were you back when I was slaving at the Hot Shoppe?

Bloomberg Report: Airbnb Growing In Popularity PDF Print E-mail

According to a recent survey, at least 60% of travelers who’ve tried an airbnb experience are planning to do it again. They now prefer the home rental to staying in traditional hotels.

In your travels, you may have slept in a posh hotel room that once was occupied by visiting royalty, generals, admirals and business tycoons. Of course, you paid $500 and up for the privilege sleeping in the bed.

You could bring a group of friends to stay in what was once the Palm Springs, California, mansion of major movie icon Liz Taylor. And pay just $625 a night for a total of four bedrooms. That’s about @156.25 each. Also included is a pool, spa, dining room, living room, kitchen and much more.

You may opt to airbnb at the former Liz house just to experience the old glamor, or make it a family reunion or other special occasion. It could be fun to schedule a wedding there, considering Liz married nine times during her celebrity lifetime.

San Diego CA: Tour Of The USS Midway PDF Print E-mail

Senior Correspondent PJL, Omaha NE: As an old sailor, I had the recent pleasure of visiting the USS Midway (CV-41), now moored permanently as a museum, and open daily to the public. Commissioned just as World War II was ending in 1945, the Midway sailed in the fighting Navy for 50 years. Combat included the Korean War, Vietnam and Operation Desert Storm.

As we went aboard, out of old habit, I saluted the colors and the Officer of the Deck, and then the tour. Free headphones and audio took us through the one-way route for visitors that included three main areas.

Guest Senior Trave Writer PMO, Jersey City NJ: We sailed on a two-week Scandinavian cruise out of Dover, England. Port visits included Copenhagen, Denmark; Helsinki, Finland; Oslo, Norway; Stockholm, Sweden; and St. Petersburg, Russia.

It was a very enjoyable journey, and we had some memorable experiences. The most unusual and impressive moments were during the two days we spent in early springtime St. Petersburg. We knew the history of the city and were anxious to see as much as possible.

Broadway & Hollywood: Fake Costumed Characters PDF Print E-mail

They’ll annoy the hell out of you and want money to pose for photos. When they hug and grope tourists, you can’t know how clean they are under those homemade costumes. They’re often dangerous to passers-by when they fight each other for best sidewalk turf. The costumes are not authorized by Disney nor other originators.

How do you deal with the bothersome characters? Especially when you’re with vulnerable young kids, the quick answer is to move away swiftly. If approached, give a quick, loud NO! If the kids want to pose with genuine cartoon characters, take them to a Disney or Universal theme park.
