Safety Tips: With Grandkids At Amusement Parks

A recent sad news item reported that an 11-year-old girl fell from a Ferris wheel seat and was killed. According to park officials, it was the first accident in the ride’s 25-year history.

Unfortunately for the family, statistics didn’t matter. They lost their young child. All safety requirements were met, and riders were securely strapped in at the start. However, the girl either had a faulty strap or managed to loosen it to cause the tragic fall. Some safety tips could avoid such terrible accidents.

Travel costs seem to be rising all the time, and physical challenges, as well as potential dangers, always lurk around the globe. These factors are causing many seasoned citizens have decided to cut back on their wanderings. Or just stay home.

We heartily disagree. Senior travel is invigorating, enjoyable and an excellent way to keep body and mind functioning. Mark Twain wrote about it a century ago, and it certainly still applies today, especially for seniors:

So, if it’s OK with the handler to allow a brief pause, offer some words of appreciation and/or some friendly pats on the faithful furry head.

Former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani, 73, fell recently and was hauled off to the hospital. Fortunately, his injuries were relatively light and he was soon walking OK again. Other famous oldsters, including astronaut John Glenn, Hillary Clinton and Justice Sonia Sotomayor had injuries after falling in bathrooms at home or while traveling.

Many younger celebrities have also had similar falls. They include Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, Tom Cruise and Madonna. And many past stars who did dangerous stunts for a living, including Jerry Lewis, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and John Wayne endured their share of painful falls.

Bern's has won many honors, including a very high compliment from TV chef Rachel Ray. She called it the best steak restaurant in America. A favorite is the traditional porterhouse, served with side dishes of asparagus, caramelized red onions and a twice-baked potato.
