Airport Info Vision: Will She Grant Wishes?

According to a USAToday report, a virtual video projection called Carla .... not Glinda the Good Witch ... now greets and gives messages and information in Boston’s Logan International Airport. The three-dimensional image won’t wave a magic wand, but speaks in friendly tones in English, French and Spanish. However, although she may look like a real human of the right size and depth, she is just a recorded hologram and won’t answer questions.

There’s a similar virtual guide now at the Washington Dulles Airport, with the name of Paige. According to news reports, New York City's three major airports are expected to get their vitual guides sometime this summer. If the experiment works, passengers at other airports can soon expect to meet similar hologram advisers.

Among the messages the virtual guides offer are how to prepare for security inspection, location of flight gates, schedule changes, airport exits, taxi, bus and other services. She won’t tell passengers to click their heels and say, “There’s no place like home.”

So far, the virtual guides are not involved in security check-ins. However, with ever-improving technology, could it be possible passengers may soon experience virtual groping from grinning hologram agents?

Question: Go With Group Or Wander Free? PDF Print E-mail

Q: We’re newly retired and are thinking of doing a lot of traveling, possibly roam the world with packs on our backs. Because we’ve never done it except in the U.S., should we first sign up for group trips? MPB, San Jose CA

A: Tho a group travel plan will have some disadvantages, we suggest that your first world wanderings should be with an organized commercial travel agency.

Advantages: When you travel in an unfamiliar country, group trips come with experienced guides. All is scheduled, so you don’t have to wonder where to roam next. Dining and sleeping accommodations are safe. If your trip is for a week or more, you could form friendships with other seniors. Of course, there’s also safety in numbers everywhere you roam.

Disadvantages:
You’ll be at assigned places at specific times, so free roaming will be limited. Also, if it is a bus trip that requires long drives, it can be exhausting to spend the days hopping on and off the bus. When on your own, you take chances on hitting bad deals on sleeping and eating facilities.

Savvy Sr Traveler: Dress Smart For Long Flights PDF Print E-mail

Not many remember way back when commercial flying was a dress-up affair. Can you recall photos of glamorous Hollywood couples, all ready for their close-ups, as they emerged from their 10-hour flights?

For example, arriving in Hollywood from London, Sir Laurence Olivier and wife, Vivien Leigh, ascended the metal stairway as if dressed for a movie premiere. Today's air travelers are much less formal than those long-ago icons of the silver screen.

San Francisco CA: Senior Chooses Favorite Hotels PDF Print E-mail

Guest senior traveler: My best in San Francisco are the Fairmont, the Mark Hopkins, the Palace and the Westin St. Francis. They're among the oldest hotels in the famed city, but are still wonderfully five-star, luxurious places to meet, sleep, drink, dance, romance and dine.

The Mark Hopkins is perched atop Nob Hill across the street from the equally classic St. Francis. If you get a room with a big window or balcony overlooking the city and the Bay, it's worth sitting there sipping a drink just to enjoy the view, whether dawn, day, twilight or night.

The Top of the Mark is a restaurant/nightclub/meeting room suite on the hotel's highest floor, and serves as a last hurrah for Navy guys before they ship out. When they return, it’s also traditional to celebrate their survival again at the Top.

Uber Mobile App Rides: We Hear Good And Bad PDF Print E-mail

When we think of Uber, we remember Rodney Dangerfield’s oft-lamented cry, “I don’t get no respect!” The taxi-like service that hires individual car owners to deliver passengers is very successful in many parts of the world.

However, outcries from traditional taxi companies and individual complaints are constantly casting shadows over Uber’s services and drivers. The most prevalent gripe is that Uber isn’t required to follow the strict hiring, licensing and insurance regulations that taxi drivers must have. In some cities, Uber has been cited for various offenses or totally banned.
