Do you want your privacy (and privates) exposed to airport X-rays?

Do you want to bare it all the next time you fly? A new security X-ray device, called the Backscatter, was recently installed in Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix. Much more sensitive than all previous scanners, it shows security screeners an almost naked X-ray image of your entire body. The device has since been installed in other airports throughout the US.

There have been many complaints since the device was used in tests, primarily because the X-ray image was too graphic for some sensibilities. Now, according to Sky Harbor officials, the image views have been "adjusted" to show less than the nude image. What will they do ... use fig leaves?

Royal Caribbean: Join Volunteer Hikes At Sea PDF Print E-mail

RCL offers passengers opportunities to contribute to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The organization sends kids with life-threatening medical conditions on free trips to Disneyland and other wonderfully wishful destinations.

On a day during many RCL cruises, volunteers can take An International Walk for Wishes. Participants pay $10 and up to hike around the ship's exercise deck for a specified period of time. It earns them a logo t-shirt and warm personal pride. Royal Caribbean and other cruise lines offer a variety of incentives to encourage passengers to contribute to worthy charities.

For more volunteer info, check with your cruise line or go to www.usatoday.com/experience/cruise/best-of-cruising/best-of-cruise-line-charities/13357099. For info about Make-A-Wish, go to www.wish.org

Q: Why Do You Always Diss Street Performers? PDF Print E-mail

Recent travel4seniors.com articles hint that costumed street performers are pests and dangerous to tourists. Do you ever consider why they do it? Many are unemployed, homeless and/or recent immigrants, and it’s the only way they can make a living.

I’m old enough to remember pretzel and Italian water ice vendors. And as kids, we all loved the organ grinders and their monkeys. Come down off your high horse and consider that many of our parents and grandparents had to work the streets to feed their families when they first came to America. RBJ and MLJ, Jersey City NJ

A: During his teen years, our dad rode a (not high) horse and wagon around South Philly peddling fruits and vegetables.

Las Vegas NV: We Love It, But Can’t Sleep! PDF Print E-mail

Q: On our most recent Vegas visits, the noise got to us when we went to bed. In casinos and restaurants, the modern music is ear-shattering. Even when walking outside, the never-ending rock pounding sounds like street jackhammers.

During the day and evening, we can tolerate loud Vegas. But when we usually get to bed in our hotel room around midnight, the hallway and outside noises often keep us awake for hours. What can we do about it? FMS, Dresher PA

A: Don’t call the front desk. If you’re dragged to another room, the Vegas odds of finding peace and quiet won’t be any better. Consider a couple of simple ways to block out the noise.
