Kahului Airport, Maui, Hawaii: Just Call It OGG |
|
|
|
![](/images2/2011pics/srmauiairprt.jpg) Our recent flight into Maui was a revelation. We’re familiar with LAX, SFO, JFK and even BOO, ACK and AWK. And refuse to list here the one for Fukuoka, Japan.
However, we just wondered why OGG identifies the Maui facility. Is it named for the Wizard of Ogg, or because the island is shaped like a giant ogg? Actually, the story is an inspiring one. It’s in honor of Jimmy Hogg, a local guy who rose from laborer in 1930 to skilled pilot of everything from biwings to jets. hawaii.gov/ogg

![](/images2/2011pics/srvertigomovie.jpg) You don’t have to be an Alfred Hitchcock fan to visit this neat boutique hostelry near Nob Hill. It was called the Empire back in 1958, when some scenes from the thrilling film starring James Stewart (dangling from the roof) and Kim Novak were shot there.
The cheerfully-bright lobby colors welcome guests, along with orange and yellow themes in the pleasant guest rooms. To emphasize the theme, the iconic movie plays continuously in the hotel lobby.
Room rates are from about $240 per night. Now part of the Haiyi chain, Hotel Vertigo is located at 940 Sutter St., San Francisco CA 94109, close to the city’s top restaurants, cable car and upscale shopping. hotelvertigosf.com

![](/images2/2011pics/srcards.jpg) My wife and I enjoy our retirement travel, but have one continuing argument. In Reno, Las Vegas, Indian casinos, at foreign resorts and on cruise ships, I enjoy playing the slot machines. She tolerates it as long as I don’t lose too much, but refuses to join me. She says the machines are rigged and I’m just throwing my money away. Is she right? PF, Wilmington DE

The Los Angeles International Airport’s Imperial Terminal has the Flight Path Learning Center. In addition to the free gym and yoga facilities, it boasts the only aviation museum and research center located directly inside a major U.S. airport.
For kids through to seasoned citizens, the Center offers a flight-simulator training program. The address is 6661 Imperial Highway, Los Angeles CA 90045. For more info, go to flightpathmuseum.com

Top Bucket List Choices By Senior Travel Pros |

![](/images2/2011pics/srsistine.jpg) We questioned several veteran travel agents thus: Before you make that journey to qualify for angel wings, what would be your final earthbound trip? Here are some responses:
Rome: Of course, because of what many of my senior clients would quote: See Rome and die! I’d revisit the Vatican and look up at Michelangelo’s ceiling. That has to be a clue of what awaits us. There’s also the Colosseum, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and that little café by the Tiber I frequented decades ago with mi dolce amante. HJDeL, Denver CO
Paris: A favorite senior memory is Dinah Shore’s, The Last Time I Saw Paris. My bucket list for final moments in Paris would include strolling the Champs-Elysées in springtime, an evening at the Folies Bergére and a lovingly-shared bottle of fine French wine by the Seine. KLH, St. Paul MN
New York: I’d see all the current Broadway plays and musicals. I’d go to the top of the Empire State Building at sunset and get one last glimpse of my favorite town. Then, I’d hit the Carnegie Deli and eat a mile-high pastrami sandwich, with heaping sides of fried onion rings, potato salad and sour pickles. I'd top it all off with an enormous slice of strawberry cheese cake. Calories? Who cares about calories when there’s no tomorrow? JJF, USN, Retired, Miami FL
