State Dept. Warns U.S. Travelers About China Problems

The already strict Chinese government is getting tough on American visitors this year. Several tourists are currently charged with offenses and are being detained. We seniors can only guess that the already paranoid officials in Beijing are afraid of American spies posing as tourists.

Of course, those Chinese bosses want to continue unloading billions of dollars worth of crappy toys, computers, cars, clothing and other junk on America. They just don’t want us to return the favor by shipping a bunch of sneaky agents to spy on them.

Before making China travel plans and reservations, keep in close touch for the latest potential problems info at state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/china-travel-advisory

San Francisco CA: Robbery Housing Costs Keeps Rising PDF Print E-mail

The City by the Bay becomes more and more infamous for its grossly overpriced rentals and real estate prices. Spurred originally by high salaries at tech companies, the average one-bedroom apartment rent now is $5k a month, and a small row home in the city sells for a million bucks.

Of course, at the same time and for the same greed-inflated reasons, San Francisco has one of the fastest growing homeless populations in the nation. It’s a daily problem for those paying the sky-high rental and home purchase prices to live there. Walking on city sidewalks requires stepping around or over many people, their belongings, trash and bodily droppings.

If your travel plans include San Francisco, expect very high prices for restaurant, hotel and airbnb private home rentals. Also, when you stroll down the street, expect to encounter many very high addicts and their very low lifestyles.

Q: How Do I Get Fair Prices At Asian Souvenir Shops? PDF Print E-mail

Just retired, we’re taking our first trip to the Far East, with stops in Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai. We plan to buy presents to take home to our grandkids. And we’d like some advice on how to get best prices. RRO’L, Champagne IL

A: If you buy large presents in department stores, you’ll probably get best quality and convenient shipping, but not lowest prices. If you buy smaller gifts you can carry home with you, try the street markets. There you may be able to bargain down prices from original quotes.

Q: Why Does Airplane Shake When Landing In Las Vegas? PDF Print E-mail

Is it my imagination, but every time we fly into the Nevada city, I can feel my seat jump around. Does the pilot do it intentionally? FLN, Burbank CA

A: Maybe it’s a heavenly warning to be careful of how you bet at the casinos and enjoy the Sin City night life. Seriously, especially in summer, the shaking is because of heavy thermal heating of air surrounding the airport. The nearby mountains and hot wind currents often shake the aircraft as it approaches the field for the landing.
