Manhattan Bargains For Budget-Minded Senior Visitors PDF Print E-mail

New York City is one of the most expensive in the world. Senior visitors shouldn’t be shocked if a dumpy, little hotel room near the theater district is $500 a night. A seafood dinner in Manhattan could be $100, while in smaller cities an identical meal goes for $35.

A prime orchestra seat ticket in Philly could cost $100. For the same at a Broadway theater, the price could set you back $250 and more. However, New York City is an exciting experience. Senior Dilemma: Should I Travel The World Alone? PDF Print E-mail

Q: Recently retired and a widower, I’m still very active and physically fit. For years I’ve planned a solo trip, where I can backpack and roam freely by myself. My kids argue that it isn’t a good idea for an old guy because of terrorism, crime and other potential problems. Are they right? RLMcN, Newport RI

A: Of course, their concerns should be considered. Tho you say your health is OK, there’s also the undeniable fact that aging affects all of our abilities. It can cause unexpected difficulties when traveling in unfamiliar surroundings.

We have some concerns about your health and safety. The absolute first task is to inform your family physician about details of your intended trip. Describe physical requirements, such as hiking, sightseeing, swimming, climbing and other activities. If you are OK, along with some advice on your limits, ask what prescriptions or other meds you should take along.

We also suggest that you consider making the solo trip a buddy journey. For many health and safety reasons, two seniors can take better care of themselves, as well as each other. For some fun ideas, check out the new TV reality series, "Better Late Than Never", about old guys, including Bill Shatner (Captain Kirk) and Henry Winkler (Fonzi), as they travel the world together.

Airport Security: Patience And Understanding Help PDF Print E-mail

Senior Guest Correspondent PPR, Bend OR: The most critical moment each traveler must face in airport security is going through the prison-like frisk and search ordeal. It’s vitally important that you understand in advance what is expected when in that line, including what you may or may not take on your flight.

The list changes frequently, so it’s is your responsibility to keep up on the latest info. On another recent flight, after my wife's carry-on suitcase had gone through the x-ray process, she was pulled aside by two stern-looking guards. They did the electronic stick search of her entire body, and then began working on her opened suitcase. Clothing and other items went flying all around, as they seemed to be looking for something very dangerous. Other guards came over and joined in the clothing-in-the-air toss.
