Rome, Italy: Don’t Eat Or Drink In Historic Areas PDF Print E-mail

Touring the Eternal City is always a great pleasure, but not when fellow visitors get sloppy with drink bottles, paper cups, sandwich wraps, cigarette butts and other debris. When in Rome, do as the Roman do to keep the city clean. Otherwise, it could cost you money.

City officials enforce a municipal ordinance outlawing all eating and drinking in areas of "particular historic, artistic, architectonic and cultural value." They include such popular landmarks as the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Spanish Steps and others. Unless you’re prepared to pay a $650 fine, obey both the law and what should be considerate behavior for other visitors and Romans.

Las Vegas NV: Experience Indoor Skydiving PDF Print E-mail

Remember the song from “Peter Pan”:
Think of all the joy you'll find when you leave the world behind,
And bid your cares goodbye: You can fly, you can fly, you can fly!

For gutsy seniors visiting Sin City, this sinful thrill should be a priority on their bucket lists! Just as astronauts train for space walks, the vertical wind tunnel at Vegas Indoors Skydiving gives the feeling of floating in air. You actually can fly!

Monte Carlo, Monaco: Be James Bond For A Day PDF Print E-mail

Monaco should be on every senior traveler’s bucket list. On our most recent visit, we made sure it would be a memorable one, and we hope you’ll do the same.

When we arrived at the beautiful Riviera resort city on our senior bus three-hour tour, we then swaggered up the outer steps of the Monte Carlo Casino. We did our best to look like famed 007 sleuth, determined to beat the house while sipping a vodka martini, shaken not stirred.

Realistically, we played only on the casino’s first level, on inexpensive slot machines as you’d find in Vegas, Atlantic City or your local Native American casino. However, if you’re willing to gamble real money as 007 would, resume your swagger, go up to the second floor where all the much more expensive table games are located. Who knows...you may meet Pussy Galore, Ursula Andress or Goldfinger there at the roulette wheel.

Messina, Sicily: Was Will Shakespeare Born There? PDF Print E-mail

As Williiam (Guglielmo) might have written, Essere o non essere (to be or not to be), that is the question for seniors who consider traveling to Sicily. We’ve visited the Italian island several times, and despite the negative image fostered by “The Godfather” and other Hollywood fiction, we found Sicily and its people peaceful, friendly and inviting.

A recent outlandish theory about Shakespeare has some scholars wondering. The locale of the Bard’s play, “Much Ado About Nothing” is Messina, a picturesque city in northeast Sicily. Other plays are also set in Italy, including the immortal, “Romeo and Juliet”, “The Merchant of Venice”, “The Taming of the Shrew” and at least a half-dozen more.

5 U.S. Locations Movie-Loving Seniors Should See PDF Print E-mail

Today, movies are mostly special effects, digital and computer-created. In the most recent production, we know Noah’s flood scenes are fake. However, many seniors can still fondly remember and treasure when Hollywood actually took the cameras out to the real world.

Here are some favorite real-life scenic locations that bring back great movie memories, and could make fun senior destinations for this travel season. And when you’re there with your video-capable smartphone, you can shoot selfies and/or your own edition of your fave movie moments.

1. Last Vegas (2013): This is the latest of many shot in Sin City. Enjoy some of the Vegas Strip and hotel pool scenes where Robert De Nero and Michael Douglas strolled and ogled. Then, go inside to the casino and try your luck.

2.  Stagecoach (1939): The movie that made John Wayne a megastar was just one of many director John Ford filmed in Monument Valley, his favorite Arizona location for Western dramas. Take a jeep ride around the magnificent rock formations, and be sure your camera captures the magnificent scenes.

3. King Kong (1933): Who can forget when the big ape rampaged along Fifth Avenue, then climbed the newly-constructed Empire State Building? When you do it with your camera at the top, be sure to pose while swatting imaginary fighter planes as they try to shoot you down.
