Actual Locations Of Oscar-Winning Movies PDF Print E-mail


Today, all kinds of new digital and other gizmos create images of other worlds. Everything’s done in the studios, and moviemakers don’t have to drag their cameras all over the place anymore. We seniors can only look back with nostalgia at actual locations where some of our favorites were filmed.

1. Monument Valley, Arizona: Director John Ford and star John Wayne made mucho movies at this beautiful area. Rocks and deserts sculptured by Mother Nature served as backdrops to historic scenes, such as in She Wore A Yellow Ribbon.

2. Halona Cove, Oahu, Hawaii: In From Here To Eternity, Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr had that torrid love scene on the beautiful beach.

3. Salzburg, Austria: The Sound of Music was filmed in the verdant valleys, the church steeples, the green countryside and the rippling rivers. Julie Andrews in her opening scene twirled among the peaks of the Alps.

The famed city’s public area is known for picnics, concerts, jogging, boating and other fun activities. In addition, visitors can enjoy its many statues. They include famous people, dogs, cats and fairy tale figures.

A seated figure of Danish children’s author Hans Christian Andersen reads a story to a duck standing at his feet. This reminds children of all ages of his famous ugly duckling, who matured into a beautiful swan.

Gambling and glitz are a great draw to Sin City, but they're not necessarily the best part about a Las Vegas experience. Of course, big-time gamblers, called whales, find the best part about their visits to be the thrill of betting thousands of bucks on the turn of a card or toss of the dice.

Ordinary citizens with limited budgets consider the best part of a Las Vegas vacation to be the great variety of bargains. Luxury hotel rooms that cost $400 a night in New York, London or Tokyo go for $100 and less at top Las Vegas Strip resorts.

Xian, China: The Amazing Terracotta Warriors PDF Print E-mail


Seeking underground water in 1974, engineers dug down 20 feet into the soft earth. They didn't find water, but discovered an amazing army of sculptured men. There were 8,000 uniformed, armed, life-sized figures, each with individual facial and body features. Now world-famous, they’re called the Terracotta Warriors of Xian.

Archaeologists have determined that the sculptures are at least 2,200 years old. Historians report this display was created during the reign of an early warrior, King Qinshihuang. His figure lies in a tomb among the soldier formations, as they were created to protect him in the afterlife.
