Long Beach, California: Sand, Surf And Queen Mary PDF Print E-mail

The annual Long Beach Grand Prix in early April brings thousands of car racing fans to the area. Just south of Los Angeles, the seaside city is also a great destination for senior visitors.

Long Beach is filled with much to see and do. It’s 40 minutes from downtown Los Angeles, and close to Disneyland and other Southern California attractions. The city is served by the Blue Line train system, less than an hour’s ride from downtown Los Angeles directly to Long Beach. The airport, LGB, is served by Alaska, Allegiant Air, Delta, US Airways and JetBlue.

Some suggestions: Head down to harbor near Shoreline Village and rent a kayak from Boat Rentals of America. While paddling around the picturesque harbor, admire the skyline and check out the Queen Mary. The historic retired cruise ship carried famous movie star passengers in the 1930s and GIs during World War II.

Nevis, The Bahamas: Stay Where Horatio Honeymooned PDF Print E-mail

The Nisbet Plantation Beach Club features all-inclusive vacations in luxurious cottages on the sunny isle. The club was named for an 18th Century resident of the island, Fanny Nisbet. She married famous British naval hero, Admiral Horatio Nelson in 1787.

The fact that the future victor of the Battle of Trefalgar already had a wife named Frances in England didn’t seem to disturb the lovers on this beautiful Caribbean island. Unfortunately, Nelson died in the 1805 battle and never returned to the fair Fanny.

The current AAA Four Diamond beach club continues the romantic tradition by designing many of its upscale services for lovers of all ages who visit to begin or renew their togetherness. All the inclusive sleeping, sunning, dining, drinking, dancing, swimming and other features start at about $500 per room per night.

Las Vegas NV: Holy Destination For Senior Roadies PDF Print E-mail

With tongue firmly in cheek, it’s a hilarious premise to equate Sin City in any way with religion. Who could ever expect to find anything possibly holy in a place that makes Sodom and Gomorrah look like the Vatican?

The only sincere prayers anyone hears in Las Vegas are offered up heavenward in the casinos for slot machine jackpots, poker royal flushes or seven straight dice passes. Additionally, many road trippers in Sin City are retirees in RVs seeking riches at the casinos and full bellies in the famed buffets. Look for specials offering all-you-can-eat meals during each 24-hour period for a single price of $25.

London, England: Revisiting Old Memories For Free PDF Print E-mail

Senior Scribe Frank L., Baltimore MD: In these days of rising travel costs, this historic city offers some of its most fascinating attractions, many absolutely free. I’ve visited London many times over nearly 75 years, and have actually found many of its free places to be the most interesting.

Some people go to London for its great theaters. Others enjoy the historic royal pomp. The city’s beautiful parks attract many. When I went to London recently, I revisited memories of my first time there in 1945 as a 17-year-old GI.
