United Air To Verify Alleged Comfort Animals On Flights |

United and other airlines are tightening their rules for people who go aboard with dogs, cats, pigs, lizards and, recently, peacocks. To ride in the passenger areas with their owners, the animals must be medically-certified and properly inoculated.
The stricter rules bring up memories of your travel4seniors.com editor’s first civilian air flight in 1945, at the end of World War 2. With a forward Navy unit in the Philippines, I was sent from Manila, Luzon to Mindanao to inventory Navy gear and weapons to be shipped home.
The Philippines Airline was beginning regular service. Aboard with owners were all kinds of animals, including cattle and poultry. They roamed the aisles for two hours, accompanied by loud voices and heavy odors. Fortunately, on the return trip I hitched a ride on a Navy submarine back to Luzon. So, on your next United flight, hope your seat mate isn’t traveling with a medically-certified comfort goat.

Forget the phony ads hawking $49.99 a night rooms. In the slightly-less luxury hotels just off the Strip, you may see that charge at the top of your bill. However, added to it will be resort fee, parking, local taxes and a few other add-ons. Expect to pay another 40 to 50% above advertised price quotes when you check out.
Of course, charges don’t include tips to bellhops and garage attendants. A few suggestions on avoiding some of those piled-on extra costs. Leave your car at home. Airline prices are often cheaper than gassing up and daily parking fees. Many Strip hotels are within walking distance of each other. There are also cheap buses, Uber and short taxi rides, all available at your hotel front door.

It’s called surge pricing with on-demand rides when major live sports and entertainment events happen. Yesterday, when downtown was quiet, your ride home cost $10. Tonight, when you attend a Super Bowl or Broadway hit, it could be $150 for the same ride. According to reports, some ride charges before and after last year’s Super Bowl increased 500%.
Of course, private drivers not with traditional taxi companies need to find income where it’s most available. Surge pricing makes up for the hours of cruising streets looking for passengers, while fuel and maintenance costs rise. What can senior passengers do about it? Not much, unless you bargain with the driver before you get in, or arrange for a friend or family member to take you and pick you up after a major sports or entertainment event. |
