New York NY: Katz's Hot Pastrami on Rye Is World’s Best PDF Print E-mail

Guest Travel Writer PLG, Brooklyn NY: There may be disputes among delis and their patrons from Tel Aviv to Beverly Hills. However, no one can question the sheer joy of biting into this classic Katz’s sandwich.

The Katz’s hot pastrami on rye is piled high with succulent meat, and typically served with a kosher pickle and a bottle of Dr. Brown's Root Beer. The price just before the turn of the 20th century for this serving was 15 cents, plus a nickel tip for the waiter. Today, it costs at least $25, plus a much heartier tip.

However, even a certified chow hound could have trouble finishing more than half of the huge sandwich, and the waiter will wrap the other half for doggy bagging. Of course, when you get home, your dog will only get a tempting whiff of it.

Westminster CA: Big Food Pleasures In Little Saigon PDF Print E-mail

When the war was winding down in Vietnam in the 1970s, and American forces pulling out, thousands of South Vietnamese immigrated to the United States. A large number settled with families in and near the town of Westminster, in California’s Orange County.

Called Little Saigon, it’s the largest community of Vietnamese immigrants in the U.S. Of today’s Westminster population of 90,000, it’s estimated over 36,000 are ethnic Vietnamese.

There are many Vietnamese restaurants in the Westminster-Garden Grove-Santa Ana area. Just a few include:

London UK: Our Visit To Westminster Abbey PDF Print E-mail

Guest senior travel writer PKL, Toronto, Canada: On a recent tour of London, we spent time in ten-century-old Westminster Abbey on Parliament Square. Long admirers of British history, we wanted to experience it first-hand. This is where famous poets, kings, queens and warriors from all those centuries now rest in glorious memory.

The center aisles of the church are where royal weddings and funerals are held. Now in her 90th year, Queen Elizabeth II was married there in 1947. Seeing the chapel was a sad reminder that it’s also where Princess Diana’s funeral took place nearly two decades ago.

Florence, Italy: A Memorable Experience PDF Print E-mail

Guest Senior Travel Writer PCO’B, Chicago IL. Of all our traveling experiences, Florence (Firenze) is our favorite in many ways.

The sparkling city hasn't changed much in the past 400 years, and strives to be the most welcome in Italy. As I gazed at the famed statue of David in the Accademia Gallery, I wouldn't have been surprised to see Michelangelo there. Even though the sculpture is perfect, he’d probably want to add a few extra chisel strokes.

Travel Quotes: Film & Music Star Danny Kaye PDF Print E-mail

The late great performer said: To travel is to take a journey into yourself.

Your travel4seniors.com editor had an experience that proves how true Kaye’s words can be. I was stationed with an advanced Navy unit near the bombed-out Rizal Stadium in Manila, The Philippines, in early 1946.

The stadium was still in ruins when USO troupes traveled the world to perform for U.S. Army, Navy and Marine forces. Among the stars who entertained at Rizal were Bob Hope, Al Jolson, Martha Raye, Jack Benny and Danny Kaye. Kaye sang and danced numbers from his movies, featuring his famous fast-talk lyrics that had us all laughing and singing along.

If your journey takes you to Manila, include a trip to the historic site. For current info and scheduled events about Rizal Memorial Stadium, go to www.philstar.com
