Seniors travel to Manhattan for Broadway shows and great restaurants. They fly to Los Angeles for the sunshine and beaches. However, they visit Chicago mostly for business meetings and conventions.

Does anyone ever go to the Windy City just for the pleasure of staying in a Loop hotel?  The answer is yes, and you can find just the right ones that fit your budget and plans for business, pleasure or sightseeing in that great city. A luxury, casual and budget hotel suggestion:

Venice, Italy: No Tourist Roller Bags On Streets PDF Print E-mail

If a wheeled carry-on or suitcase will be with you when you arrive in Venice, make sure you don’t break the law! Tourists and other visitors are no longer permitted to drag wheeled bags along the city’s ancient streets and bridges.

According to the Venice City Council, they cause too much damage to the fragile thousand-year-old paving stones and steps. So, if Venice is on your bucket list, lug a backpack, fanny bag and anything else that won’t rut the streets. Offenders could be fined $600 or more.

Incidentally, the law is a bit discriminatory. It does not apply to local merchants and workers who regularly schlepp through the city’s stone streets with metal-wheeled carts and other heavy vehicles.

Have A Grand Las Vegas Time at the MGM Grand PDF Print E-mail

Senior Travel Correspondent LLMcN, Sacramento CA: There have been two MGMs on the Las Vegas Strip. The first opened in 1973, and after a disastrous fire in 1980 that killed 85 people and injured more than 600, it was gutted. The rebuilt hotel now on the site opened as Bally's in 1986. In 1992, a brand new hotel complex was erected about a mile south on The Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard), and today is known as the MGM Grand Resort.

When the new resort opened, exterior all emerald green glass panels with a big golden MGM lion outside, the entire inside entrance area was a big fake forest maze. Among the plastic trees were life-sized images of Dorothy and her pals on the Yellow Brick Road to Oz.

Hotel owners tore that down several years later and put in more slot machines. The MGM casino area, including hundreds of machines and table games, now one of the largest in Las Vegas, occupies nearly 200,000 square feet.

San Francisco CA: Restaurant Staffed By Ex-Cons PDF Print E-mail

Was that Al Capone who just served our soup? The waitress looks like Bonnie, and busboy’s name may be Clyde. When you’re wandering in the City by the Bay, consider stopping for a bite at Cala. It’s an upscale, Mexican-style seafood restaurant that also functions as a rehab project for many of the city’s former jail inmates. They train and serve as kitchen help, waiters and cleaning staff. The project’s goal is to qualify them to apply for jobs in the food industry.

Dinner prices start at about $40 per person. Cala is located at 149 Fell St., near the city’s Civic Center and UN Plaza. calarestaurant.com
