Detroit MI: Zombie Amusement Park Proposed

Detroit has many attractions, including the Henry Ford Museum, Motown Museum, Zoo, Detroit Institute of the Arts and several upscale casino-hotels. But, with the downturn of the economy, the city has not been high on the list of vacation destinations.

Now, someone in Detroit has come up with an idea to build something that could resemble a haunted Disney amusement park. Tentatively called Z World, it would be inhabited by spooky features and creatures from currently-popular films and TV programs featuring zombies.

The most interesting and oddest part of the proposal is that the theme park’s setting will be based on stark reality. It would be built on what is now the most blighted, rundown area of the financially- and socially-troubled city. The zombie theme will fit right in with what has become a poverty-haunted war zone. The promoters believe Z World will bring jobs, repairs, new construction, visitor money and many other benefits into an area that badly needs as much help as it can get.

Times Square, Manhattan NY: Beware Of Bare PDF Print E-mail

Along with other sidewalk panhandlers dressed as Mickey, Minnie, Batman and Superman, tourists now have a new visual experience. Although the New York City mayor and police are threatening to arrest them, semi-nude ladies, wearing nothing but painted skin above their waists, are trawling for tips in the famous Manhattan location.

If your travels take you to the area and you’re confronted with the semi-nudity, offer a polite refusal or stop, pause, stare and make a contribution to the exposition.

My Five Favorite Classic California Hotels PDF Print E-mail

Retired Business Traveler Contributor LKL, Oklahoma City OK: Over nearly five decades, I had the pleasure of visiting some of California’s most outstanding hotels. Sometimes the room rates were sky-high (and even higher today), but once I experienced the posh surroundings, I always believed the price was well worth the enjoyment. These are my favorites:

The Fairmont (950 Mason St., San Francisco CA 94108, fairmont.com/san-francisco) Current rate from $250. Under construction when the 1906 earthquake devastated the city, the Fairmont survived. Since then, the magnificent hotel has stood like a proud sentinel on Nob Hill, offering sweeping views of the city to its guests.

My first visit to the hotel was in early 1944 when assigned to the nearby Treasure Island Navy Base. While awaiting sea duty, a shipmate and I treated ourselves to a night and dinner at the Fairmont. Costs then were $8 for the room and $5 for a steak dinner, dessert and drinks.
