Hong Kong, China: Fantastic Asian Destination PDF Print E-mail

This free-wheeling city is a vibrant, international destination for savvy seniors. Entering Hong Kong is easy. No visa is necessary for American tourists. A passport with at least six months validity remaining is accepted. Visas are required for visiting other parts of China.

Many international airlines serve Hong Kong, including Cathay Pacific, which offers direct service from major U.S. cities. The Airport Express railway system connects with both Kowloon and Central Hong Kong, each way costing about $25. Downtown Hong Kong is divided into two sides, known as Kowloon and Central, separated by Victoria Harbour. Overall, it's a fairly compact city and easily explored on foot and with public transit. Some of the world’s best shopping bargains in designer clothing, electronics and many other goods are available downtown, with no sales tax.

The Star Ferry travels across Victoria Harbour and offers views of the Hong Kong skyline from both the Kowloon and Victoria sides. The ferry operates every ten minutes, and costs less than a dollar a ride.

Victoria Peak is a high point overlooking the city, harbor and surrounding area. The peak is reached by riding a funicular-style railway, the Peak Tram, which first operated in 1888. There is a viewing tower at the top, along with a restaurant, gift shop and miles of hiking trails. Adult round-trip tickets are about $10.
