London UK: Heathrow (LHR) Airport Makes Scents PDF Print E-mail

The Daily Mail reports that one of the world’s busiest international airports is filling the air of its newly-renovated terminal with scented air samples from around the world. The Scent Globe permits visitors to sniff pleasant odors as they board and return from flights.

So far, the samples are familiar floral and spice smells of Brazil, China, Japan, South Africa and Thailand. Beyond Heathrow, there are many other familiar odors beyond the air of LHR. How about these not quite so sweet-smelling destinations:

New York City: A whiff of the East River on a hot summer noon as loaded garbage scows float gently by.

Chicago: A breezy day at the stockyards as thousands of unhappy cattle unfragrantly await their flagrant fate.

Beijing: When the smoggy air pollution gets thick enough to stir in a wok and the sewers back up.

Mexico City: During the annual all-you-can-eat chili bean contest.

Venice: The slushy sounds and smells of a gondolier’s oar as he glides along at daily-dump-your-garbage-in-the-canal time.
