British Airways begs crews to fly with no pay

CNN reports that cash-strapped British Airways has asked its 40,000 employees to work for a month without pay. BA’s CEO Willie Walsh explains that the airline lost $656 million in the past year, the most in the history of the airline. He admitted that if the losses continue, there must soon be severe cuts in service and employee ranks.

We know this should be no joking matter, but can you imagine what kind of service you’ll get if you’re a passenger on a BA aircraft staffed with unpaid pilots and flight attendants?

Passenger Survey: What’s The Best Cruise Line? PDF Print E-mail

J.D. Power has announced its Cruise Line Satisfaction Report for this year. After questioning thousands of seagoing veteran passengers, the rankings are somewhat expected.

We’ve sailed on dozens of cruises since our retirement 24 years ago, and except for some schedule problems, have never experienced a major gripe. We enjoy cruising, and will continue as long as we can get up the gangway. We’re pretty much in general agreement with the survey choices, although other seniors  may have differing opinions, based on their good and not-so-good cruise experiences. Disney Cruise Line leads the pack on the survey. We certainly agree that it offers the most innovative and fun-filled ships and entertainment. One possible negative, in our opinion, is that some seniors may not be happy sailors with the Mouse.

A typical Disney cruise has a boatload of very active kids aboard. Although it has adults-only spaces, there’s no way to avoid kids at meals, entertainment and pool areas. Any normally grumpy retiree who needs a quiet and peaceful cruise, without the constant scamper of little feet and high-pitched yells, should choose a different cruise line.

The best cruise line list continues in descending order with Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Norwegian and Carnival. Other cruise lines were omitted, including favorites from our experiences Princess and Cunard.

They’ve always provided high quality food, excellent accommodations, fun excursions and the very best service from the crews. Also, we don’t know why Cunard didn’t make the list. We always find it typically posh in British elegance.

Ahoy: Tell us about your seasoned seagoing senior sailor’s selections about your favorite cruise lines?
