As usual, there will be all kinds of rock concerts and contemporary music festivals throughout the world this season. Fortunately for we older and more moderate music lovers, there will also be events featuring our kinds of classical, opera, ballet and jazz. Here are just a few of the upcoming events scheduled in Europe:

White Nights Festival, May 19-July 12, 2009, is an annual extravaganza of classical music, military bands, opera, and ballet, held annually in St. Petersburg, Russia. White nights are the summertime days in Northern Russia that never seem to end, even after midnight. www.wnfa.org/festivalstars.htm.

Bath International Music Festival, May 22-June 6, 2009, is an annual music event offering many types of music, including classical, native dance, opera and jazz, held in the beautifully Medieval city of Bath, England; www.bathmusicfest.org.uk.

Holland Festival, June 4-28, 2009, is the largest performing arts festival in the Netherlands, with dance, music, and theater, held annually along the colorful canals in Amsterdam; www.hollandfestival.nl.

Copenhagen Jazz Festival, July 3-12, 2009, is mainly memorable jazz of the 1920s through 1940s, and features many great international jazz musicians, set in Denmark’s beautiful downtown Copenhagen; www.jazzfestival.dk.

Festival d’Aix-en-Provence,  July 3-July 31, 2009 is an annual program of classical music and opera held in the charming city of artists and flowers in Southern France;  www.festival-aix.com.

Stockholm Jazz Festival, July 15-18, 2009, is a giant gathering of jazz fans and musicians, produced in lovely summertime Stockholm, Sweden; www.stockholmjazz.com.

Salzburg Festival, July 25-Aug 30, 2009, is a world-famous classical music and theater festival that attracts famed conductors, musicians, and opera singers, held annually in Salzburg, Austria. Ticket prices range from $200 to $500, and get very scarce as festival time approaches. For those who can’t get tickets to the main event, Salzburg also presents many inexpensive music and entertainment events throughout the city; www.salzburgerfestspiele.at.

Wagner Festival, July 25-Aug 28, 2009, is an annual music extravaganza devoted to the work of the great classical opera composer Richard Wagner, held in Bayreuth, Germany; www.bayreuther-festspiele.de.

International Music Festival, July 17-Aug 22, 2009, is an annual celebration of ethnic folk music, dancing and singing, held in Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic; www.festivalkrumlov.cz.

Puccini Festival, June 10 - August 23, 2009, is celebrated in the famed composer’s honor in his city of birth, Torre del Lago, at an outdoor venue overlooking Lake Massaciuccoli, close to nearby Tuscany, Italy; www.puccinifestival.it.

Jazz à Juan’ International Jazz Festival, July 11-19, 2009, is an annual celebration in the city of Juan-les-Pins on an exciting stretch of the Riviera in Southern France, featuring many well-known jazz musicians from around the world; www.antibesjuanlespins.com.
