ATM tips for foreign travel PDF Print E-mail

Two good ATM tips if you are traveling internationally.

We recommend using your ATM card to get cash instead of travelers checks or carrying cash.  ATMs are plentiful in most countries and most airports.  Many also have a selection to pick english so all the instructions are in english.  look for the USA or British flag, sometimes thats the button for english.

1.  Let your ATM card bank or company know you are going abroad

Call the customer service number for your ATM card(s) and let them know you will traveling outside the USA.  Without this notification, you may find a transaction blocked, as the card company thinks your card has been stolen and taken to another country.

2.  Make note of your PIN code with just numbers.

Some foreign ATMs have only numbers for your secret code, no letters.  So if your secret code is letters or a word, make note of the corresponding numbers when you are at the ATM in the USA before you leave, and make a mental note before your trip.  Do not write this (or any PIN) information on the card or keep it in your wallet in case of theft.
