Museums in America, France, England, Russia and other world destinations attract senior travelers with their great collections of art. America also boasts many fascinating military museums, including those that once were battle-tested warships of the US Navy.

USA Today recently conducted a poll to solicit choices of the very best from among 188 historic military relics of bygone history. The result is the battleship USS Iowa taking second place, and leading the list is the aircraft carrier USS Midway. Both are now permanently moored in Southern California waters.

The USS Midway (CV-41) is at Navy Pier in San Diego. Commissioned in 1945, the enormous ship served in aviation combat missions in the Korean War, Vietnam and other actions until 1992. Visitor passes $20. midway.org

The USS Iowa (BB-61) has been docked at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro since 2010. Commissioned in 1943, the battleship was involved in combat operations during World War 2, Korean War, Vietnam and other missions. Visitor passes $20. pacificbattleship.com
