Calming Canines Ease Airport Stress


According to a USA Today report, many airports now offer friendly dog therapy for passengers and families in waiting areas. Especially at this busy time of year, the crowds, noise and confusion can be overwhelming.

A friendly paw, furry coat and wagging tail can do much to ease the stress of travelers of all ages. So far, as many as 40 U.S. airports feature volunteer dog owners and their specially-trained pets offering the free canine therapy.

Also Judy Garland, Cab Calloway, Merle Haggard, Otis Redding, Frank Sinatra, The Mowgli’s and many, many others have lauded ‘Frisco, from yesterday’s crooners on to today’s rockers.

My first visit was in 1943, just out of Navy boot camp and on my way to troop transport duty in the Pacific during World War 2. While waiting assignment, I bunked at the Navy base on Treasure Island. It’s a little spit of land under the Bay Bridge halfway between Oakland and San Francisco, and the site of the San Francisco World’s Fair in 1939-40.
