In future travels, you may want to experience places that can bring back fond memories of some of your favorite movies. For instance:

Halona Cove, Oahu, HI: From Here to Eternity (1953): The much-imitated steamy love scene of Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr kissing while being washed by the surf took place on this white-sand beach in Honolulu. Of course, the star-crossed lovers had to part as the World War II attack on Pearl Harbor erupted around them.

Beverly Hills CA: Pretty Woman (1990): The Julia Roberts hooker character actually lived in a scuzzy Hollywood hotel. However, most of the film took place at the upscale Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills after she met business tycoon Richard Gere. Some scenes were filmed across Wilshire Boulevard as she shopped at exclusive clothing stores on posh Rodeo Drive.

Machu Picchu, Peru: Motorcycle Diaries (2004): This film is based on writings of young medical student Ernesto Guevara, who later joined Cuba’s Fidel Castro and was known as Che. It’s about a 1952 motorcycle trip through South America Che took with a friend.

Climbing among the ruins of the mountain-top 15th Century city, Che’s awakening revolutionary feelings were inspired. He wrote that he was greatly affected by the tragedy of how the beautiful city and its highly-civilized inhabitants were wiped out by greedy politicians and brutal military overlords. 

Murchison Falls, Uganda: The African Queen (1951): This classic of the journey of the little steamboat down the Nile River during World War I starred screen immortals Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart. Memorable scenes included Hepburn laughing as Bogart imitated alligators, hippos, chimpanzees and baboons.

Some of the most dramatic moments were when the boat went precariously over the high falls and survived. The couple later entered Lake Albert and became heroes when their homemade bomb sank a German warship.

Katz Deli, New York NY: When Harry Met Sally (1989): The Greenwich Village deli on Houston Street gained worldwide recognition because of the famously panting love scene between Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. Director Rob Reiner’s real-life mother, Estelle, said the line, “I’ll have what she’s having.” Founded in 1888, the deli still serves some of the greatest kosher food in NYC.
