Venice, Italy: No Tourist Roller Bags On Streets Print

If a wheeled carry-on or suitcase will be with you when you arrive in Venice, make sure you don’t break the law! Tourists and other visitors are no longer permitted to drag wheeled bags along the city’s ancient streets and bridges.

According to the Venice City Council, they cause too much damage to the fragile thousand-year-old paving stones and steps. So, if Venice is on your bucket list, lug a backpack, fanny bag and anything else that won’t rut the streets. Offenders could be fined $600 or more.

Incidentally, the law is a bit discriminatory. It does not apply to local merchants and workers who regularly schlepp through the city’s stone streets with metal-wheeled carts and other heavy vehicles.
